"Candyland" concert stage

December - January 17

Grade 2s and all elementary students did a fantastic job at our concert on December 12. We also wrapped up several units and went home for the holidays tired but happy! It was great to welcome students back on January 7. We also welcomed Miss Grandan to the team, as she will be teaching Room 8 students for the remainder of the year while Mrs. Mang is on maternity leave. We have begun studies on Measurement, Magnetism, and Iqaluit. These are all fun units that enable students to enjoy a lot of hands-on learning. We are also using the popular "If You Give A Pig A Pancake" picture book series as a template for students to follow as they create their own stories. Our Dance unit begins the week of January 20 with Artists-In-Residence teaching some mad skills to our group.

Halloween Pumpkin Carving Contest 

The Grade Two classes have been working hard to participate in Elboya's Halloween Pumpkin Carving Contest. The pumpkin on the left was created by Mrs. Mang's class (bats flying across the moon). The pumpkin on the right was created by Mr. Grant's class-it is a hamburger. Both classes look forward to viewing the creations made by other classes later today.

October 7 - 11

Last week, students began using leaves as printmaking stamps. We completed the leaf art this week by using sponges to dab Fall colours around the leaves. We will display these artworks on our bulletin boards.
We had a great day at the Leighton Centre. Room 7 enjoyed some painting activities, while Room 8 made wire sculptures. We all enjoyed the breathtaking scenery and sketched the view in our mini sketchbooks.
In Science, students designed cargo boats from tin foil. They made predictions and tested a variety of cargo. Some boats worked suprisingly well and managed to carry a fairly heavy load without sinking.

Sept. 30 - Oct. 4

     Welcome to our blog / newsletter where we share and review our Grade 2 learning!

     As you know, we began our Spelling program this week. Students were placed in one of 3 groups and are learning how to read and follow instructions on these activities. These lessons involve reading, sentence writing, working with a list of words, and in the more challenging group, an introduction to editing. We will work on this program throughout the year during most full-length school weeks, with the work due on Thursdays, and quizzes on the word lists given on Fridays.

Students brainstormed several “Fall” words and used them to write acrostic poetry. The completed poems will go into students’ Visual Journals, which is where we put the majority of your child’s finished projects. Visual Journals can be viewed during conference times and are sent home at the end of the year.

     In Math, we worked on recognizing and creating increasing patterns. Students used a variety of materials to create patterns that increased with each repetition. Ask your child to recognize and describe patterns around the home and neighbourhood.
